The Liberal Democrats (often referred to as the Lib Dems) are a liberal political party in the United Kingdom.

The Liberal Democrats were formed in May 2014 as one of the three original parties and has been active since its foundation, along with the Conservative Party and the Labour Party.

The Liberal Democrats have frequently been in government, serving in the first, third, sixth and seventh governments and usually in a coalition with the Labour Party and the Green Party, under leaders such as Dems4Vince, Remiel, Bnzss and JellyTom. Since August 2017, the Party has sat in the Official Opposition with the Green Party.

The party identifies itself as a centrist party, attracting members from both the left and right of the centre of the political spectrum. Despite their moderate politics, the Liberal Democrats still have some key ideological differences to parties like the Labour Party, mostly on social issues. The party has been home to some of the most interesting and controversial members of the Model House of Commons and many of the currently banned members of the chamber were members of the party.

History

Dems4Vince, otherwise known as Jacktri, was the first leader of the Liberal Democrats from June to September. He was subject to a Vote of No Confidence due to "forcing his own views on us in a cavalier matter." and creating a so-called "joke" manifesto. his response to the Vote of No Confidence was "who will rid me of this turbulent priest" and smearing other members of the party, including future leader Remiel. Dems4Vince was removed from power, then joining the Scottish National Party.

Dems4Vinces’ successor was Remiel, who is the longest-serving leader of the Liberal Democrats, serving for 305 days. Under Remiel, the Liberal Democrats saw a spell in government, where he took up the role of Deputy Prime Minister, they also saw time in the shadow cabinet, where he served as the deputy Leader of the Opposition. Like many future leaders, much of Remiels achievements came from the rest of the executive, as he was often inactive. He resigned citing personal reasons.

Bnzss was elected leader in July 2015. At the October 2015 general election, the Liberal Democrats won 18 seats, making them the third-largest party in the House of Commons behind Labour with 22 and the Conservatives with 21. No party having an overall majority, the Liberal Democrats joined a coalition government with the Labour Party, Green Party, Pirate Party and independent member RoryTime, with Bnzss becoming Deputy Prime Minister and other Liberal Democrats taking up ministerial positions. This general election was the most successful for the party since the first general election and saw them regain their position as the third largest party. In December 2015, Bnzss chose to resign as leader of the Liberal Democrats, Deputy Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer, citing an end to his 'shelf life' as leader. JellyTom won the subsequent leadership election.

His successor was JellyTom, who served as Deputy Prime Minister under the Chamberlain government. He delivered the best Liberal Democrat electoral performance in MHoC history, returning them as the largest party. He then entered a controversial governing coalition with the Conservatives, Crown National Party, who were later joined by UKIP. The coalition saw JellyTom serve as Prime Minister. The coalition deal he negotiated in Government was widely regarded to be an awful deal for the party, having made many concessions to the Conservatives. During his tenure, the Liberal Democrat's ideology shifted from the radical liberalism the Lib Dems had been associated with under Bnzss, into more of an "Orange Booker" party. JellyTom later resigned due to a VoNC attempt by members of his party unhappy with the coalition the Liberal Democrats now found themselves in.

Tim-Sanchez, a veteran of the Party, won the subsequent leadership election. The contest was fairly controversial, with purpleslug losing due to 3rd preferences by 1 vote. Tim-Sanchez only served as Prime Minister for a short amount of time, before disbanding the Government. With the Liberal Democrats being the largest party in the House of Commons, they took up Opposition as a lone party. However, a month on, the Labour Party joined them to form the 11th Shadow Cabinet. Tim-Sanchez's tenure was marked with inactivity from him, often leading to the 3 other exec members, specifically the Party President thechattyshow, who wrote the majority of the controversial General Election VI manifesto in his absence. That being said, the party became more unified during Tim-Sanchez's tenure.
